Rear torsion bar adjustment

Postby srozick » Sun Jul 02, 2017 8:49 am

I have two question that I need help with, I have an early Beck Spyder, approx. 1988- chs # 016b. I car had a cheap set of coil overs on the rear. We removed them and the car is sagging in the back and needs adjusted. Is there enough clearance to pull the spring bar cover off, adjust the torsion bar and get the cover back on with the body on the chassis?
Is there enough clearance between the bottom of the spring bar and the body so that the spring bar will not hit the fiberglass after it is separated from the axle?
Thanks.

Thanks Will.
We did move forward and cautiously removed the spring.
I need to NOW remove and adjust torsion bar.
We are trying to simply pull it out by hand but it is nit coming out.
Any hints or how to get the torsion bar to come out in such a confined space?

Thanks again.

Hi Steve:
I Visited My Machinist Buddy, And We came Up With A Puller Design Which He Built. Works Great. I Will Send Pictures If You Like.
My Beck Was Very Early Too #002B. The Bars Were Also Tight. I Don't Have The Torsion Bar Side Access Holes Which Enable Completely Removing The Bar.

So, with Some Ingenuity I was Still Able To Lube The Center Splines ( A good Move And Almost Necessary). I Lubed The Splines With "Anti Seize Compound". :D

Now The Bars Come Out With Light Hammer Tapping. That Is If You Want To Remove Say The Left Rear Bar, Just Go Over to The Right Side Bar And Tap It In And It Will Push Out The Left Bar.

My Torsion Bars Were So Tight That We Also Made A Tool To Push Them Back In. :D

PS: HAVE YOU CONTACTED CARY HINES ABOUT ADJUSTABLE SPRING PLATES. HE MAY THEM FOR MID-ENGINE

HOPE THIS HELPS.

Will,
Thank you for the reply.
I would appreciate pictures of your tool work.
I was unsure as to whether you could go to the opposite side and tap the torsion bar free but that depends or whether you can get one side free or not. Please forward pictures. I have been formulating a design for a tool myself but, hopefully, your pictures can get me through the trail and error portion of the process.
I had been communication with Carey regarding adjustable swing arms but they do not offer a swing arm in the size of my torsion bar tube.
please forward pics.
Thanks again
