Will this tire combo work?

Postby albaran » Sun Aug 27, 2017 2:50 pm

As discussed in previous post, I want to get a taller tire to reduce highway rpms. I have the typical 4.5" rims in front and the 5.5" in the rear. My tire guy says to run the 165/80R 15 all the way around. Anyone have this combo?

what will they be replacing (size/brand)

I think the recommended tire will be too wide from the 4.5" front rims

I have run 165/80s on Bridget (the Subaru-powered MGTD replica) forever, and even on autocross track. I believe my fronts were 4.5 and rears also 4.5 (though they might be 5.5) when I ran the steelies. Now running MWS painted 60-spoke knock-off wires, 15x4.5, and the same tires. They fit very nicely.

I think I'm going to try for slightly wider rears on the Spyder but the fronts will probably be those same 165/80-15s. They ride nice, they look the part, and my (1973 Bug) Speedo (in the MG) reads right on throughout the range.

Remember: for accurate speedometer readings (on a stock gauge), the front tires ought to be about 25.5 inches around. For lower RPMs, the rear tires ought to be bigger.

The 165/80/15 is a 6.5" tire. I'd check with the manufacturer of the tire as to their recommended wheel width to ensure that the bead of the tire seats correctly.

albran,

I recently bought Vredestein Sprint Classic's for my SE/Beck 550, 165R-15 86H fronts and P185/70R-15 89H rears. I love them, they look great and my car handles great with them on. My steel rims are 4.5 front & 5.5 rear. They are a Summer tire though not an all season. The fronts are 25.7" and the rears are 25.4" diameter. I've posted pic's and the same info on this site under New Tires below your post but see you've noted that info.
Tire Rack does have spec's for all tires they sell it's where I got the diameters I was looking for on mine. Check their site for the specs your looking for. I'd listen to Larry.

Beck runs 165/80R15, or the old 165R15 which is the same exact thing. Yes, the tire is 6.5 inches wide, but as is often harped about, a 185 section fits a minimum 5 inch rim. So a 165 section will fit just fine AND operate very well on a 4.5" rim. Didn't the Beetle come with 165R15 radials on a 4.5" rim? I remember it this way( sold tires for a few years putting myself through college. I kick myself for not taking one of the old tire fitment books. Info GALORE in them!)

A 175/70 is the maximum suggested size on a 4.5" rim.

I'm still happy with my 185/65R15 on my 4.5" front Vintage190 wheels, for the record.

Thanks for everybody's response. I just ordered the four 165/80r 15s. The tire guy says they should fit both the 4.5 and 5.5 rims with no problem.

What type of replica do you own? I just replaced the 165/80-R15's on my Beck because they rubbed on the front. Here's my thread.

It is a Thunder Ranch which I think is similar to a Beck.
