Vintage Spyder - Plexi Windshield HELP!!!

Postby Satcat » Wed Mar 28, 2018 10:44 am

Hey Guys

I just joined this Forum hoping someone can help me out. I just bought this Vintage Spyder the owner replaced the Plexi Windshield with a speedster windshield and doesn't know what he did with the original one. I talked to Greg at Vintage Spyder and he said it was a one off built front windshield.
Because the holes don't match now there are Tons of holes exposed on the top of the dash. Hoping someone knows where I can get this Plexi Windshield from.

Thank you for any help

Dean

Since it's a Vintage you might try Greg at Vintage Spyder. He fits both glass and plexiglass windshields and can probably help.
PS The photos aren't showing up, perhaps because they're too big.

Yeah, they have to be really small, 150Kb or less. The only thing I've ever disliked about this site.

It's Greg Leach at Vintage Motorcars Inc. now. (714)894-1550. They just moved to Hawaiian Gardens, which is where he started, at Vintage Speedsters old shop.

Still the same website @ vintagespyders.com

Since you already spoke with Greg and he says its not the standard plexi he or others sold/sell I'd contact Russ at FibreSteel. If Russ doesn't recognise the profile or know of where you might find one you should find someone with one of Dario's plexi screens. Based on the photo I can see, I think that might be what was installed on your car. It was a smaller screen that was made to match the original one available one these cars. It had the tighter/narrower profile.

Also, keep in mind that whatever you do you will need to patch holes and paint. Either keep the 356 windshield you have now and repair the holes from the old plexi or find the plexi and repair the holes from the 356 windshield.

There will be large post holes on both sides of the window and then underneath the glass a series of rivets that when removed will leave several holes. In theory Fibersteel's plexi windshield will allow you to switch back and forth between glass and plexi. Other than for inspection I'm not sure why you would want to.

I think I would find one that is readily available and then fill the other holes from the old plexi windshield. Admittedly, I did like the look of the old one and the tint.

Man, they mounted the heck out of that plexiscreen, didn't they?

Like you, I'm going to go back to the lexan screen. I thought the Speedster screen would offer more wind/rain protection, and it does, but I can't stand the header being directly in my line of sight. Fortunately for me, the profile of my plexiscreen is almost identical to the footprint of the Speedster screen, so the only big worry I'll have is the two bolts holes for the side pieces.

As someone pointed out, it's pretty much going to call for a fill and paint, unless you want to go with plugs, which I think is what I'm going to do. I've actually got a few, like the license plate holes the PO drilled in the clamshell, rather than installing a proper Porsche license plate bracket.

Good luck on finding a screen. FWIW, I found a guy who could make a new window for my 59 Dorsett Catalina, but it's not cheap. He quoted me $400 for the side that's broken, $800 for both sides so that the weathering/oxidation (or lack thereof) would match. I think $800 is probably what a 550 windscreen would cost, based on the size. If you're interested, let me know and I'll see if I can dig up his contact info. He pretty much specializes in making plexi windshields for vintage boats.
