I put one in my car, but it was for initial setup versus everyday use. I never installed the "remote" knob.
Since I did a custom brake setup and needed to approximate weight transfer and brake forces front to rear, I figured having the ability to "dial in" wheel lockup front/rear was useful.
Basically (guys correct my memory here) you ideally want all 4 wheels to lockup at the same time. Front lockup early causes understeer, rear lockup early and you're spinning. Obviously one is more benign than the other, but even lockup means you're getting max braking before you loose traction (and control).
So if you look at it carefully, It adjusts the distance between the pedal and the front and rear master cylinders. The shorter the distance the more force to that cylinder. So adjusting it one way or the other will respectively give you more or less "bias" to the front or rear brakes. Since your weight shifts forward under most braking, you need less force in rear or else you'll lock them before the fronts (bad). So the idea is you brake to see what locks up first and adjust to get it as even as possible...
