Raby 356 engine down under

Postby Aussiespyder » Sat Jun 14, 2014 4:53 pm

Was at the local Porsche dealership and saw this in the workshop about to installed in a 356 convertible.

The mechanic said his customer imported it from the US at a total cost of $17,000!!!

That might actually be cheap for a fresh Raby 356 engine.

I'm pretty sure that's a VW Type IV and not a Porsche 356 engine. Porsche 356/912 engines have one bolt to hold on the crank pulley. VW Type IV engines have 3 bolts.

It looks like a type4 to me too. DTM and Synclink cable throttle linkage, cool! Bet that is a Tangerine exhaust too.

Guys - yes I realise it is a Type 4 - it is going into a 356!

Ken, your title "Raby 356 engine down under" was a bit mis-leading. That's why I commented and indicated that it wasn't a 356 engine but a VW Type IV

No worries Larry - I guess it was. The guy is installing as his 356 engine is hard to start!

$17,000 price tag plus paying the official Porsche dealer to install it and while they are at it can they recondition the transmission.

I'm guessing not much change out of $30k.

I hope Jake set those carburettors up well.

The exhaust comes out of the bottom of the head too. Type 1s of course come out the sides

Ken, I'd be happy to set the carbs up for a free round-trip ticket down under! Not a problem.....

Danny

I'll offer your services to Porsche dealer. Them covering the airfare might be cheaper than the charge out rate for tuning. Not being able to plug the carbs into the diagnostic computer might just stump them!!

That would be awesome! Always wanted to take a trip to your neck of the earth.

Probably get my snail confiscated as well as my wideband A/F gauge! You know how the TSA is today.
