Locating autocross in SF Bay Area

Postby RicardoSwe » Thu Nov 10, 2016 11:47 am

I'm gathering local autocross info in one post, just for easier reference in the future...
Pls excuse the rambling message.

I've been working on finding a nearby autocross would accept my Vintage Spyder for some time (off and on). Thanks to RS-60 mark and others who've helped point me to what's available in the Bay Area.

I find several posts here that touch on autocross, such as these two:

Info I've found -
Good Guys auto shows - 15 minute drive to Pleasanton, CA. Requirements: roll bar but no helmet. (I have Vintage's removable roll bar.)
Best choice for me, but it turns out that they only allow non-American cars once a year. The next event that would allow my Spyder is Aug 25-27, 2017 in Pleasanton, the "West Coast Nationals". Other Good Guys events in Pleasanton such as Nov 12-13, 2016 and Mar 25-26, 2017 do not allow non-American cars.

Edit July 14, 2017
I called Good Guys customer support today to ask for specifics about registering for the Pleasanton "West Coast Nationals" August autocross event. Unfortunately, they told me that there is no autocross planned for this August and that there are no non-American car autocross events planned for Good Guys. All future autocross events are for American cars only. This is a big change from what they had told me their previously.

Very unfortunate since this had become my best nearby option for autocross. Back to the planning. We'll see.

Thanks for all the previous suggestions for locations/venues.

BMW Car Club autocross - 1-1/2 hour drive to Marina, CA. Requirements: helmet but no roll bar.
This is a very good club & very welcoming. In 2015 I took my BMW to their "Car Control Clinic" which included a small autocross course. They told me then that they'd gladly accept my Spyder at their regular autocross events. Occasionally they have a fun run autocross in Crows Landing, CA, about 1 hr away. Their frequent autocross events for the Golden Gate Chapter are in Marina; typically a 7AM start time so an overnight would likely be called for.

Edit Mar 22, 2017
2017 BMWCCA Golden Gate Chapter Car Control Clinic dates are May 6, 2017; June 18, 2017, Oct 21, 2017. I'm guessing these will be in Marina, CA. Later in the year there are two others -- advanced CCC and extreme CCC.
These events include a small autocross, emergency braking experience, learning to drive with accelerator only (without using steering wheel. (This is actually pretty easy to do.) These are all coached by qualified folks. Fun events! I hope to make one of these and scratch my Spyder AutoCross itch.
Must be BMWCCA member to participate.

Empire Sports Car club - 1-1/2 hour drive to Sonoma Airport in Santa Rosa, CA. Requirements: don't know.

Porsche Club of America - don't know specifics. Probably local.
My experience has been that they don't welcome replica Porsches. I used to be a member, but sold my Porsche 356 and dropped out.

Driving long distances on freeways in my Spyder is not my cup of tea, but I do it occasionally. "Drive defensively like a motorcycle". So I've been looking for places closer than 1 hour away. I guess I need to just accept the more distant places and do it. This all adds up to maybe doing it next Spring or Summer.

Thanks again for contributions ---

- TrackMasters will host a few AX events at Sonoma racetrack (AX is on the parking lot behind the stands) - 5-7 sessions/day at $70/day
- SCCA - closest ones in Marina / Monterey or Crow Landing
- PCA in Alameda but need to be PCA member or drive Porsche (not sure about replicas)

Thanks Vlad and Rick

It looks like Marina airport, near Monterrey is the place to be. Lots of autocross there.
