Postby TomD » Sun Oct 22, 2017 10:03 am

Instrument set, Brazilian manufacture, 105mm dia. These have been on the shelf for a number of years. Seem to be fully functional however the combo instrument has a lens that has come loose. The aluminum panel is included. $150 includes postage / US sale only.

Tom,

Does the aluminum panel have real "engine turning"...or is it an applique ?

The panel is 'engine turned' not an appliqué. The process uses an abrasive disk or rod spun against a polished surface. Engine turning is a bit of a misnomer but the term has taken on to describe this finish. If interested check out http://www.circuitousroot.com/artifice/ ... index.html. This finish probably isn't true to the original 550 dash panel but I like it and have used it on a number of detailed parts.

In the past, I've taken an Ink eraser, chucked it up in my drill press and made my own "engine turned" parts. Any shop that sells tools for machinists have the abrasive pads in varying diameters so you too can make your own "engine turned" parts.

It's a very nice plate but I'm gonna use it as a template, because it doesn't quite align with my steering shaft hole. I'll be passing it on in a few months in case anyone has an interest.

Tom...so you did it yourself...I learned to do this in high school metal shop, many moons ago [8D]

The reason I asked is that my Beck has a panel from Fibersteel...vaguely mimicking Turkish metal hammering from early Ottoman times...but likely just a "finish" that some metal supply yard had at the time (2005)

I believe that the one pictured is from Fibersteel and I just refinished it. The instrument and steering shaft holes seem to vary a bit from car to car. 0.125 aluminum is easy to work with so making one to fit your car is a good DIY project.

I’ve done Larry’s trick, eraser and Dremel. Time consuming but effective.

fwiw the original Spyders had a "hammertone" silver paint for the binnacle.
