Glass windshield-complete

Postby kennethclay » Wed Jul 25, 2018 10:10 am

Complete glass front windshield (upper and lower frame, glass, gaskets, etc.) from a Thunder Ranch 550 spyder for sale. Converted to plexi recently and like it so much that I'll never likely put the glass windshield back on. Excellent condition - no chips, cracks, etc. $500 + shipping. Since it IS glass, local pickup might be better. Located in NY Metro / Westchester county.

Curious re plexi: can you use wipers?

Also: no top now, correct?

I have wipers on from before, but disconnected them so I don't accidentally scratch the plexi. No top, now or prior.

I wouldn't use wipers on plexi, it would ruin it. I'm pretty sure no top either, nothing to attach it to.

Based on my experience when I had the full 356 windshield, wipers and soft top. I found the wipers didn't wipe, the top didn't seal and it was not something I found enjoyable to drive if I needed the top up. The wipers rotation even caused the arm to hit the body where the indents are (where the arm attaches to the drive motor).

I found that I never took the car out on long trips or if there was risk of rain or other bad weather anyway. I didn't lose any time in the saddle and personally love the plexi. If someone wants to drive in rain and go on weekend trips and such then I'd say you need the top and windshield, otherwise not so much.

Yes, agreed, it isn't fun. But WAY better than getting a bath, and less worry about what the weather is going to do. Different strokes.

If you like to go on weekend trips, say Carlisle for instance, you need the whole shebang of glass shield, wipers and top. My wipers wipe, don't hit the body, and the top mostly seals. Of course, this is the old car. I still haven't built a new top for the new car yet.

Danny,
Doesn't the old top work on the new spyder?

I agree with you on that Danny. If I drove my car on long trips like you I'd have to have the top, and with it comes the windshield and wipers. My old car was a TR, there was only one way to install the drive motor. The drive gears fit in the correct spot for the indents but it didn't matter how the arms were attached it always hit. Maybe everything fits better on the Vintage than the TR. If I remember right your top is almost custom made.

Interesting detail on the TR that I was not aware of. Definitely will be testing the wipers before painting.

If you have a TR and are interested there are a lot of things I'd check before going to paint. I'm very particular and maybe a bit picky, Let me know if you want the run down on the issues I found wjth mine.

I don't have a top. Use RainX to clear the glass windshield if I'm caught unexpectedly, but that rarely happens in CA. The safety glass is much safer but not nearly as cool.

I used to think that way but after having both I don't believe either one is safer than the other. Maybe if you roll the car the big metal frame will offer a bit more protection but thats about it. I'm down low in my car so I'm well below any bebris flying around. Insects hit the screen just like the windshield. I don't see any difference. Personally, unless you are out for week long trips the plexi is the way to go. I don't know of anyone making the change and going back to the windshield.

Larry, who runs this site, convinced me otherwise.

Don't most states require a glass windshield with wipers for registration? That's the reason I didn't consider the plexi.
