15” vs 16” wheels?

Postby Spydey » Sun Aug 05, 2018 3:52 pm

Pros/cons of either? I’ve seen a couple pop up w/16” but not too common.

Thanks!

3.75 and 4-inch wide 16-inch diameter wheels are correct for the car, and they should have steel centers riveted to aluminum rims. These are available at prices that you'd probably expect, which is why almost everyone is running 15 x 4.5 and 15 x 5.5 steelies or cast aluminum Vintage 190s, which cost about $700 a set.

The correct 16s offer high expense and bragging rights, which not more than one person in 1,000 will give a fig about. Tires for these are also spendy and will offer the superb grip that only bias-ply "Great Escape"-era motorcycle rubber can give you.

The bogus VW rims can be shod with anything from 145/80 15 Vred Sprint Classics to Goodrich touring tires at 205/60 15 (for the 5.5s) which will get you some grip. Basically any modern radial on a 15 will out-perform much or all of what you could get (repop Blockleys done in China for Coker?) on the "correct" wheels.

So the question you have to ask yourself is "do I want to park it on a lawn somewhere and wait for the three Porsche geeks in existence who would recognize the significance of the 16s but NOT PENALIZE ME FOR HAVING A PLASTIC FAKE 550 to amble past and give me the thumbs up? Or do I want to drive the car on public roads?"

But, there is a market for 5.5 or 6 x 16" wheels. Modern sticky tires are available to fit. I'd be a customer for some nice aluminum 16". Greg??????

They'd have to come in 2 offsets for front and rear but that's the only issue I could see coming up.

Chris Coddington will make them for you, but last I checked his model A wheels were $5200.

Yeah, that pegs my price-o-meter. How about Greg has them made for about 200-250 per?

I did just drop about $1600 going to dry sump setup though. Waiting for parts to arrive.......

Please tell that story on the SOC board, Danny. With photos.

I did not pencil-out a dry-sump system on my build, but I later heard that a double pump is made that just bolts in where your wet sump pump is now, and it wasn't $700. CB Performance, I think? Pretty sure FJ Camper is running it on his racing Ghia. Did you look at that and decide to go another way?

Scavenge stage is 26mm, pressure stage is 21mm. Any serious dry sump system has about a 2/1 ratio. I felt that it wouldn't be quite enough to chance my mega-buck engine.
I ended up ordering an Autocraft 2 stage with the sump cup. They are right in Marlborough Mass., almost down the street(3 hours)

And I will tell the story, Ed. I'm tired of having oil come out the slinger and get sprayed all over the firewall, fan, engine compartment everywhere.

Danny, Greg did my 16" wheels for me. One piece aluminum, custom off set, I believe 4.5 for both front and rear. I run 205/55/16 in rear and 175/55/16 up front.

I don't recall, it was 10 years ago when I bought them. I remember Greg saying that going to the aluminum wheels is one of the best upgrades you can do for the 550! Huge weight saving alone as well as being straighter and true. I know he has them in 15" (4" BS) for less $ but I wanted the 16" with a custom BS so I payed more. I think mine were the 1st 16" wheels he did.

D, looks like he sells the 15's for 160 - 170 per wheel, one piece aluminum! The 16's can't be too much more. Doesn't cost anything to ask, right? Likely Greg would give you a pretty good deal.

Yeah, he's really taken good care of me. I have the 15s, and they are great looking and LIGHT.

I have a feeling the 16s could be made for similar money, but aren't. Yet.
