Headrest pad question.....removal?

Postby RandyM » Sat Sep 02, 2017 7:46 am

Hey guys,

I searched the board but didn't see anything regarding this. I have found several 550's that have the headrest pad on the car. I like them and can see how they would be useful on a long drive but can they be removed?

If they are removed does it leave a few mounting holes that stand out? Me personaly I like the clean look of no pad, but if I bought a car with it already installed didn't know whats involved to remove it and how bad the holes stick out.

Hope this question makes sense.

Thanks,

Randy

Hey Randy,
I agree on the helmet faring, I didn't really want one but my SE/Beck had one when I bought it. Standard, it attaches with one wing nut in the middle inside the clam-shell (CS) see it in the first picture top left. I have clear plastic over the CS shaped a little wider along the edges of the fairing and clear Velcro at the end to help keep it from moving. There are two small holes in the CS.

Pete,

Thanks so much for the pictures, that really helps visualize it. Do you leave yours on all the time or run it both ways. I assume once off it's not too unsightly, just the two small holes.

Randy,
I just leave it on, but it is easy to remove. There's only one hole. The fairing has a plate inside going to each edge with the threaded screw in the center which goes through the clam-shell. The wing nut with washer is used to tighten it down. It's why I have the Velcro in the back to keep it from moving side to side.

My Vintage is the same. One hole with a bolt and wing nut. It can rotate so I clear vinyl'ed the clam and clear tape towards the rear to prevent rotation. Run it all the time, but one hole would be there if removed.

People often glass in a second bolt to the helmet fairing to keep it from moving. I think the fairing will probably rub the paint no matter what you do given enough time.

I put a paint protection film on the rear clam under the headrest to prevent rubbing the paint. Seems to work fine.

I have a Vintage new shape headrest with one bolt. It doesn't move. It did wear the paint a little on the old car, but I only have about 700 miles on the new one.

I drilled the hole a bit bigger than 1/4", and installed a 1/4-20 rivnut in the clamshell. Then I drilled out the threads. Gives a nice finished look if I ever remove it.

On the old rear clam I had added a 1/16" rod near the rear and drilled a small hole in the clam to stop rotation. Still got rubbing. The new calm just has the one bolt, but will rotate so I use clear tape to prevent rotation and the paint film to stop rubbing.
