Front Mounted Oil Coolers

Postby WILL » Sun Sep 04, 2016 4:45 pm

I've Noticed That Fibersteel Is Offering Some Parts For Front Mounted Coolers.
My Question ( Either For Larry Or The Owner Of An Original 550) Is, What Size OF Oil Hose Or Line Was Used On The Factory Cars To Avoid Pressure Drop ?

I don't know the answer to that question however I do know that if I had a front oil cooler, I'd run -10 hose.

AN10 Right.
That Would Mean Some Extra Filling Oil. I Will Try And Estimate The Extra Number Of Quarts.
I Haven't Decided To Do This Yet; So This Is Just For Talking Purposes

Hi Larry.
I Don't Mean to Put Everyone Asleep On Labor Day, But I Ran Some Numbers :D

By My Figuring, 10 Feet Of AN10 Has A Volume Of Just Over 1/2 Quart OR 0.637 Qt.
Thanks For Your AN10 recommendation.

Hey Will, haven't been here for a while but just saw your post.

I bought Russ's front mounted oil cooler kit and installed it a couple of years ago. Nice kit, easy install.

Hey Biker2:
Thanks For Your Post.
What Size Line Or Hose Did Fibersteel Supply ?

I Think The Front Mounted Cooler Is "way cooler" Than One in the Back With A Fan.

What Prompted You To Install It. Was It Too High Oil Temps ? Engine Size/HP ?

Thanks Again Any Pics Please !!

Hi Will, I plan on relocating mine this winter. I have a derale 15950 presently located under the clam. I am buying new remote oil filter mount (DER 25709), oil temp switch (DER 25792) and oil temp electric thermostat (DER 35022) with either 1/2" NPT or 10 AN connection sizes. I will replace the 8 AN fittings in the cooler with new 10 AN. Haven't figured out the thread or fitting size in my type IV engine case yet. I plan to cut out the opening behind the front oil cooler grill and an air outlet underneath. The cooler will be mounted there and I plan to construct a fibreglass cover to seal the area forcing airflow through the cooler and out the bottom. The only restrictions left will be the fittings in and out of the engine case. I guess I will have to remove them, figure out what they are and order replacements that are larger.

I figure I'll also insulate all the lines to avoid heat transfer to the fuel tank.
