Steering issues

Postby gotowo » Thu Nov 17, 2016 3:04 pm

It has been a while since I have posted last, but I still troll the threads to increase my knowledge bank. I have an issue with my steering where if I hit a pot hole or similar in the road, the steering wheel goes crazy springing back and forth for a few seconds losing total control. It is scary to say the least and it has only happened at low speed up to now luckily. Can anyone suggest what the issue could be causing it?

thanks Andrew

Sounds like your wheels are toeing out!
Normally rear wheel drive cars have the front wheels toeing in slightly. Get your geometry checked.

There is a steering damper on these cars which is basically a shock absorb er mounted sideways that is supposed to prevent the situation you describe. Check to see if it is attached or if it is worn out.

It may also be excessive play in the steering box. It is adjustable, but only so far before it must be replaced. Almost surely a VW part. (It may be hard to get to the adjusting score and locknut). Most likely the damper though.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys - it does sound and feel like the damper. Not sure if it would be the wheels as they have not been changed or adjusted. Would I access the steering by taking out the fuel tank??

My Beck has a removable panel under the front end. You can access the steering there.

No need to remove the fuel tank as the adjuster is usually accessed from the bottom. If there isn't an access panel, one will need to be cut. Best left to someone who has done it before.

The unknown is that you have a car that was built upside down, McRae is it ? No, seriously, because it's all reversed from what we're used to, and a different fabricator, a little hesitant to see: top or bottom.

Life with an access panel is much easier, I would recommend it for a range of repairs.

I should fabricate one like an original!
