Remote Oil Filter / Heat

Postby Armodilo » Sun Apr 22, 2018 3:11 pm

Hi guys,

Stupid question: I installed a remote oil filter on my new 2276 engine and the filter heats up to the point that it's pretty much untouchable after about 10 - 15 minutes of the car running. The temp gauge barely moves and the remote oil cooler / fan aren't starting up, so I assume this is normal but wanted to double check. How hot should a remote filter get while operating?

Cheers,

Should run at about your oil temp, which should be somewhere between 180 and 220F. So, I guess, compare it to filling a beer can with boiling water and then wanting to pick it up bare-handed.

Makes sense, just making sure.

What might NOT make sense is your oil temp gauge "barely" moving.

Get yourself one of these: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07BN84K23/re ... rd_w=t2pUO
Stick it in the dipstick hole to measure oil temp and look at the dashboard gauge. Then you will know how to relate the position of the gauge needle and actual temperature. Also, if the actual oil temp is over 180 you should feel the hose going to the remote cooler. It should be hot. If oil coming out of the remote cooler is still over 180, the remote cooler fan should be running.

You could also put a gauge in line with the oil line to check the actual temperature.
