My build of a 356A Speedster in race trim...

I'm currently building a 356A Speedster.

Although -or maybe just because- I'm not technically educated (even changing a light bulb was a challenge) I always had a dream to build a car with my own two hands.

So two years ago I started my project and I had the idea to build 'something special'.

There are so many Porsche 356A Speedster replica's out there that look like they just came out of the/a factory, I wanted to build something 'different', but a car that cóuld come straight from the fifties.

When I saw some Speedster that were raced in the fifties and the 'Outlaws' that are build by -for example- Emory I knew that is what I wanted.

So I started the build 2 years ago.

This is a little pictorial journey depicting my build until the current state of the build:

Putting on the front axle, the steering damper, the shocks (all red Koni shocks that are fitted with te time correct Koni decals; supplied by the Koni factory in Oud Beijerland)

The engine as I bought it.

It's a 1800cc Type 4 (AT) with Riechert Cooling (horizontal 901 cooling), fitted with an original 901 fan:

It's a very early AT engine block (engine # AT000778) that needed some serious cleaning and some TLC. It took some time but I think the result is worth to be shown:

Although this is not the final set-up (I fitted another exhaust and oil filler pipe with integrated dip stick)

I've added some nice 'home made' emblems:

(it took some sweat and tears but they came out quite nice. It's the Spyder-script, but I think 'Special' will do my car more justice)

furthermore I've put in some nice alluminium GT-seats and a more time correct gear shift knob:

The engine is fitted with -among other things- a big bore Mahle cilinder set and an Engle 316 camshaft. The engine produces a whopping 125 bhp and because the car will be about 650 kg I've put on a so called 'Cup Strebe':

After the summer holidays the engine will be fitted to the chassis/gearbox and then It's time for the (largely modified) body...

Yes, I did it all by myself. That's the reason the car is far from finished after 2 years....

I have to find out everything myself, with the help of a garage instruction book and some dvd's which I play in my garage box on my lap top...

When I was doing the brakes for example this one was very helpfull:

For me the build of this car is a big adventure, challenge and quest and I love it so far. Almost everyday I learn new things.

Sometimes things go wrong and I have to do it all over again, but that's part of the deal.

I'm building the car after work hours and I have quite a busy job, so most of it is done in the week-ends, holidays, and from 18:00-22:00.

I'm what you could call a perfectionist with a hint of a fusspot, so everything has to be just right. That doesn't help either to the speed of the build... ;)

I'll risk a prediction and state that when completed, you will never sell it as a mid-life crisis artifact. You hit the marks dead on in a number of areas. Good show!! =D>

In those days the cars had additional light (driving lights and fog lights) mounted at the front.
